"Climb Ev'ry Mountain" is a show tune from the popular 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music. In the musical it appears at the close of the first act, and is sung by the Mother Abbess. She is trying to encourage Maria to follow her dreams.

Ernest Lehman changed the screenplay such that song would be the first major song of the second act. When the director Robert Wise was filming the scene, the actress Peggy Wood who played the part of the Mother Abbess, claimed that some of the words were too pretentious. So she was filmed in silhouette against the wall of the set of the Mother Abbess' office. Her singing voice was ghosted by Margery MacKay, the wife of Harper MacKay the rehearsal pianist. This because Wood was unable to sing the high notes of the song.
